Despite diabetes being the #1 killer in Mexico, many Mexicans lack access to the specialty care required to treat it properly. While specialized diabetes care is available for the few that can afford it, the normal cost of specialized consults alone is expensive and cost-prohibitive to many Mexicans, particularly the poor and those that depend on the public sector for care. Clinicas del Azucar is a chain of retail clinics in Monterrey, Mexico, that offers high-quality and cost-effective specialized care to prevent and treat diabetes. Innovation grant funding supported the Patient Support Call Center that employs women with diabetes to offer support services to clients to improve outcomes and reduce risk of complications. The loan supported two new clinics via a debt financing collaboration with Global Partnerships.
